New president begins tenure at National Intelligence University

Dr. J. Scott Cameron assumed the presidency of National Intelligence University (NIU) at a formal convocation ceremony, Friday, August 25, taking over for Dr. David Ellison who retired after serving as university president since 2009. He becomes the 18th leader of the institution since it was established in 1962, and the third to hold the title of president.

Dr. Cameron brings extensive national security, intelligence and higher education experience to his new role as NIU president. Before joining NIU, he served at the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) since its inaugural year of 2004, and spent 14 years in academic leadership roles at Washington State University from 1986-2000.

Dr. Cameron is the first leader in the school’s 55-year history who comes to the role from outside the military or the Department of Defense. He begins his tenure as the university settles into its first full year at a brand new campus in Bethesda, Maryland and prepares for its decennial accreditation review in 2018.

“Dr. Cameron is the right person, in the right job, at the right time,” said Defense Intelligence Director Lt. Gen. Vincent Stewart, USMC, who presided at the ceremony. “I am confident he will bring fresh ideas and fresh perspectives to NIU.”
