On September 23, General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT), a business unit of General Dynamics, announced that it collaborated with the Virginia Army National Guard and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to successfully demonstrate advanced artificial intelligence and cloud connectivity capabilities at the tactical edge during Cyber Fortress 2025.
Cyber Fortress is a critical infrastructure exercise that brings together government, industry and academic partners annually to bolster Virginia’s defenses against cyber threats. At Cyber Fortress 2025, the Virginia Army National Guard collaborated with the Virginia, Maryland and Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives to ensure robust protection of the state’s electrical infrastructure.
GDIT, in collaboration with AWS, demonstrated an adapted version of the Defense Operations Grid-Mesh Accelerator (DOGMA) solution. Originally developed for national security missions, DOGMA integrates advanced AI, cloud computing and satellite connectivity capabilities to streamline data processing, analysis and decision making.
During the exercise, which simulated a sophisticated cyber and physical attack on a power grid, the team deployed DOGMA to provide real time visibility into aerial threats and support coordinated response efforts. The solution, which was demonstrated in contested environments where both communication and power are unreliable, restricted or even completely cut off, enabled teams to process data at the edge, make decisions rapidly and mitigate risks in real time.
“Our nation’s critical infrastructure is under constant threat from adversaries,” said Brian Sheridan, GDIT’s senior vice president for defense. “This edge solution gives agencies the ability to see what’s happening in real time and act quickly – enabling a smarter, faster response when every second counts.”
“The complexity of modern warfare demands a proactive, technology-driven approach to safeguard our critical infrastructure,” said Andre Slonopas, PhD, team lead at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory. “This exercise demonstrated that harnessing AI at the edge can be a game changer – delivering the situational awareness and decision-making speed necessary to stay ahead of emerging threats.”
