DNI Coats issues statement on CIA, State Department leadership changes
On March 13, Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats issued a statement on the change to CIA and State Department leadership.
I would like to thank outgoing Secretary of State of Rex Tillerson for his service to our country. I was honored to serve and work with him, and I wish Rex and his family well.
I also would like to thank CIA Director Mike Pompeo for his Intelligence Community service and to congratulate him on his pending nomination to serve as Secretary of State. I wish the very best for him as he assumes the important role of Secretary of State. I look forward to continuing to work with him in this new role.
President Trump has made a strong choice in his nomination of CIA Deputy Director Gina Haspel to serve as the next Director of CIA. Gina is a career CIA officer whose service began in 1985. She has extensive overseas experience and has served as Chief of Station in several locations. In Washington, she has held numerous senior leadership positions, including Deputy Director of the National Clandestine Service, Deputy Director of the National Clandestine Service for Foreign Intelligence and Covert Action, and Chief of Staff for the Director of the National Clandestine Service. Gina has received numerous awards, including the George H. W. Bush Award for excellence in counterterrorism, the Donovan Award, the Intelligence Medal of Merit, and the Presidential Rank Award, the most prestigious award in the federal civil service.
I look forward to continuing to work with Gina, and I congratulate her on being the first woman selected to serve as CIA Director.
