NGA’s military deputy moves to new roles in Afghanistan

The U.S. Army chief of staff announced on February 13 that Maj. Gen. Mark Quantock, director of operations at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, will be assigned as deputy chief of staff for intelligence for NATO’s Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan. He will serve concurrently as deputy director for plans for U.S. Forces Afghanistan. The effective date of these assignments will be determined in a few weeks.

“Maj. Gen. Quantock is a remarkable military officer and an invaluable member of our NGA leadership team,” said Robert Cardillo, director of NGA. “Since his arrival, [former NGA] Director Long and I have relied on his leadership, counsel and advice. Although he will be greatly missed here at NGA, he is especially well-suited for this critical position.”

Quantock is NGA’s first director of operations, overseeing the agency’s daily geospatial intelligence operations and executing the agency’s missions. As military deputy, he worked closely with the services and combatant commands, oversaw NGA’s worldwide deployments, and advised agency leaders about issues affecting U.S. warfighters.

“He truly understands and appreciates first-hand the value of geospatial intelligence to both warfighters and policymakers,” said Cardillo.

An announcement regarding Quantock’s successor at NGA is expected in the coming weeks.
