On June 24, global aerospace and national security company SNC announced the appointment of Dr. Joe Kopacz as the company’s first IT vice president of AI technology, a newly established executive role to lead and implement SNC’s enterprise-wide AI strategy.

This strategic position supports SNC’s long-term vision and strategy for innovation-driven, scalable growth by shaping and executing the company’s AI technical roadmaps. Dr. Kopacz brings extensive experience in AI/ML strategy, scalable software development and enterprise-wide digital initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and workforce agility.

“Joe is an incredible addition to SNC and the IT team,” said Rob Giannetta, senior vice president, information technology. “He joins SNC with a wealth of experience leading AI/ML/Automation, software engineering and customer programs. His educational and industry expertise in artificial intelligence will accelerate SNC’s adoption of leading-edge solutions across the enterprise. In his new role, Joe will work closely with IT leadership to enable corporate and business area initiatives, particularly in mission enablement and autonomy.”

Dr. Kopacz joins SNC from its affiliate and sister company, Sierra Space, where he served as vice president of software and artificial intelligence. At Sierra Space, he developed and led the company’s software and AI strategy, focusing on talent, execution, Sierra’s AI Now, and Sierra O/S – an advanced AI-enabled operating system for space, air and ground systems integration. He also spearheaded the AI strategy for commercially available tools, custom-built tools and next-gen on-orbit capabilities, supporting $4.4 billion in contracts. Dr. Kopacz managed the enterprise-wide AI adoption for 2,100 employees, emphasizing metrics, agile methodologies and enhanced software processes, resulting in a 433% improvement in project velocity.

Prior to Sierra Space, Dr. Kopacz served as program and portfolio manager at Lockheed Martin, where he led a $150 million portfolio that included AI-enabled multi-domain strike, self-driving vehicles, an AI-piloted F-16, space situational awareness, and RF communication. He also served as subcontract program manager, managing 22 high-complexity development programs valued at $101.4 million, leading a team through negotiations that saved over $10 million, and overseeing 70 supplier bids across a $3 billion satellite constellation project.

“I am thrilled to join SNC and bring the power of AI to the warfighter,” said Dr. Kopacz. “Protecting those who serve has always been a mission I am deeply committed to. SNC’s legacy of innovation and dedication to supporting our warfighters aligns perfectly with my passion for leveraging advanced technologies to enhance national security. I look forward to contributing to this extraordinary team and driving forward new opportunities that will safeguard our warfighters and support our national defense.”
