NDIA taps Gen Hawk Carlisle as president, CEO
The National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) of Arlington, VA announced on March 16 that Gen. Herbert “Hawk” Carlisle will serve as its president and chief executive officer, effective June, 2017.
“We are at a critical point for the future of national security, which requires collaboration and innovative solutions, and Hawk is a seasoned leader who can drive the strategic dialogue that needs to continue between the defense community and industry to ensure our warfighters continue to have the best capabilities and best technology at their disposal,” said NDIA Chair Sid Ashworth. “Under Hawk’s leadership, NDIA will continue to serve as a platform that brings all perspectives to the table – from all aspects of national security.”
“I am extremely pleased that General Carlisle is my relief. I have known Hawk for several decades and he will bring a wealth of experience and connectivity to the NDIA team,” said NDIA CEO Craig McKinley. “We have selected a very strong leader at a moment in time where NDIA is in a very strong position to support national security.”
General Carlisle most recently served as Commander, Air Combat Command at Langley Air Force Base. Prior to serving as Commander at Langley, Carlisle was the Commander of Pacific Air Forces; the Air Component Commander for U.S. Pacific Command; and Executive Director, Pacific Air Combat Operations Staff, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii.

I am truly looking forward to working with our national defense industry, the Department of Defense and Congress to further the defense of our great Nation,” said General Carlisle.
General Carlisle graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1978. He has served in various operational and staff assignments throughout the Air Force and commanded a fighter squadron, an operations group, two wings and a numbered air force. The general is a joint service officer and served as the Chief of Air Operations, U.S. Central Command Forward in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. During that time he participated in Operation Restore Hope in Somalia. He also participated in Operation Provide Comfort in Turkey and Operation Noble Eagle. General Carlisle served on the Air Staff as Director, Operational Planning, Policy and Strategy, Deputy Chief of Staff for Air, Space and Information Operations, Plans and Requirements, and twice in the Plans and Programs Directorate. He also served as the Deputy Director, and later, Director of Legislative Liaison at the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force.
General Carlisle is a command pilot with more than 3,600 flying hours in the AT-38, YF-110, YF-113, T-38, F-15A/B/C/D, and C-17A.
