The Real Cost of Manual Airgap Artifact Aggregation
Before Hauler existed, teams working in an airgap relied on custom shell scripts to move container images, Helm charts, and files between connected and disconnected environments. This process had to be built and maintained by engineers who had better things to do than babysit scripts. It worked, but it was slow, error-prone, and entirely dependent on whoever wrote the script last.
Hauler replaces that with a single, lightweight binary and zero dependencies, giving intelligence and defense teams a repeatable, secure way to package and transport artifacts to the edge. Treating container images, Helm charts, and files as artifacts that can be fetched, stored, packaged, and distributed through one consistent tool instead of a patchwork of scripts.

What’s New in Hauler 2.0
- The problem: in constrained or contested environments, connectivity is often unreliable rather than absent; and previously, one failed artifact in a large transfer meant restarting the entire job from scratch.
- The fix: built-in retry logic and granular error handling let Hauler automatically retry a failed item or log it and keep the rest of the job moving. No more starting over because of one flaky connection.
- The problem: large, multi-gigabyte transfers don’t always fit the bandwidth or storage constraints of where they’re headed.
- The fix: chunked hauls split a transfer into smaller pieces that reassemble automatically on the other end, so the transfer fits the environment constraints.
- The problem: operators running a product sync have no visibility into minimum requirements until it’s already consuming bandwidth and disk they may not have.
- The fix: dry-run previews show exactly what a sync will retrieve before it starts, so teams can plan for constrained storage and connectivity.
- The problem: dependencies RGS didn’t own, an intermediary OCI transfer layer and a forked signature-verification library, meant slower security fixes and less control over the tool’s direction.
- The fix: both were removed and replaced with direct, internally maintained integrations, so signature, attestation, and SBOM verification keep working exactly as before, but security fixes land faster and the roadmap isn’t at the mercy of an upstream dependency.
Simplifying Everyday Workflows
Beyond the enhancements above, Hauler 2.0 further optimizes the workflows engineers run constantly.
- Pulling artifacts straight from a local Docker daemon instead of routing through a registry first
- Trimming signatures and SBOMs from a pull when only the artifact itself is needed
- Syncing directly from an images.txt file instead of reformatting it first
- Full support of artifact path rewriting.
