Former Director of Central Intelligence R. James Woolsey to join IWP as chancellor
Ambassador R. James Woolsey Jr. will join The Institute of World Politics as Chancellor starting in November 2015, the Washington, DC-based institute announced on October 22. Amb. Woolsey previously served in the US Government on five different occasions, where he held Presidential appointments in two Republican and two Democratic administrations, most recently (1993-95) as Director of Central Intelligence.
He was elected by the Institute’s Board of Trustees on Tuesday, October 13.
Since its founding in 1990, the Institute has grown into one of the nation’s premier graduate schools dedicated to developing leaders with a sound understanding of international realities and all the arts of statecraft.
“Jim’s record of service to this country has few parallels,” said Dr. John Lenczowski, founder and president of the Institute. “There is no more staunch defender of the security of the United States in this country. We are honored and delighted that he is ready to serve the mission of IWP.”
As Director of Central Intelligence from 1993-1995, Amb. Woolsey simultaneously supervised the entire multi-agency intelligence community as Director of Central Intelligence.
He was Under Secretary of the Navy from 1977 to 1979. He also served as general counsel to the Senate Armed Services Committee.
Currently, he is a national security and energy specialist and regularly participates in national debates about foreign policy, energy policy, and national security.
At IWP, Mr. Woolsey will conduct external representation, develop new opportunities for delivering IWP’s curriculum, and help the school raise the necessary resources so that it can optimally achieve its mission.
Mr. Woolsey received his B.A. from Stanford University (Phi Beta Kappa), his M.A. from Oxford University where he was a Rhodes Scholar, and an LLB from Yale Law School in 1968.
IWP’s campus is in downtown Washington, DC. IWP has launched a campaign to raise $10,250,000 — of which $4.5 million has been secured — to purchase its campus and expand its student body and curriculum. The goal is to raise the balance by July 30, 2016.
The Institute held its Silver Anniversary Gala on October 14 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Pentagon City. The keynote speaker was the highly regarded former director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, Michael T. Flynn, Lieutenant General United States Army (retired).
