Avril Haines joins APL as senior fellow
Former Deputy National Security Adviser Avril Haines has joined the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, MD, as a senior fellow, APL announced April 6.
Just before her tenure as deputy national security advisor to President Barack Obama, Haines served as the deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency. She also served as legal adviser to the National Security Council and as deputy counsel to the president for national security affairs at the White House.
Prior to joining the White House Counsel’s office, Haines held positions as a deputy chief counsel for the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and as a legal adviser in the State Department, first in the Office of Treaty Affairs and then in the Office of Political-Military Affairs. She has a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Chicago and a law degree from Georgetown University.
“Avril is a leader who is widely respected in the national-security policy, strategy and law communities,” said APL Director Ralph Semmel. “Her insights and ability to navigate today’s unpredictable global security environment will enhance our ability to find innovative solutions to our nation’s toughest challenges.”
APL’s senior fellows are distinguished experts in national security and space who work with technical experts at the Laboratory to better inform technology and policy decisions made by U.S. military leaders and senior government officials.
