U.S. Army C5ISR demos Amazon Leo SATCOM network

The U.S. Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) C5ISR Center recently hosted a live demonstration of Amazon Leo, Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite network, at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, Amazon announced October 13. The event marked an important step forward in an ongoing partnership between Amazon and the Army to explore and deploy next-generation connectivity solutions for soldiers in the field. The demonstration showed how its primary customer antenna, Leo Pro, could successfully establish a connection and deliver reliable, high-speed internet service via its growing satellite constellation and global network of ground infrastructure.

Amazon Leo is powered by a constellation of thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit, connected by high-speed optical links and communicating with a secure global network of gateway stations, fiber, and internet connection points on the ground. Amazon Leo is designed to extend fast, reliable internet to customers and communities around the world, including large government customers operating in places without reliable connectivity, the company said.

More than 30 representatives from across the Army attended the event. Using Amazon Leo phased array antenna that delivers speeds up to 400 Mbps, the demonstration used a laptop to send and receive data as newly deployed Leo satellites passed overhead, hitting peak download speeds exceeding 400 Mbps.

“Amazon has a long track record providing critical cloud and connectivity services to the U.S. Army, and this demonstration at Aberdeen Proving Ground is an important step toward an expanded partnership,” said Liz Martin, head of government for Amazon Leo. “We deeply value our work together, and look forward to supporting the needs of tomorrow’s Army as we deploy and scale our satellite constellation.”
