Sabel Systems taps Robert Epstein as defense tech leader

On June 5, Sabel Systems announced the addition of Robert Epstein, Colonel (Ret), USAF, to its growing team of technology leaders as chief strategy and mission architect, Department of the Air Force (DAF). A nationally recognized leader with more than 30 years of experience driving innovation, digital transformation, and mission readiness across the Department of the Air Force, the Joint Force, and the defense industry, Epstein’s appointment marks a milestone in Sabel’s ongoing mission to deliver cutting-edge digital engineering capabilities to the warfighter, the company said.

He brings a distinguished record of leadership in Multi‑Domain Operations (MDO), C4ISR modernization, Modeling, Simulation & Training (MS&T), Electronic Warfare (EW), and advanced AI‑enabled mission solutions. Prior to joining Sabel, he served as a senior solution architect at Leidos, where he led major Air Force and Space Force capture efforts and spearheaded the integration of agentic AI, automation, and next‑generation digital engineering capabilities across high‑visibility programs.

A retired Air Force Colonel, Epstein previously commanded the Air Force Agency for Modeling and Simulation (AFAMS), where he transformed the organization into a high‑performing enterprise hub for Live, Virtual, and Constructive (LVC) readiness and interoperability. His military career included senior leadership roles supporting combat operations in Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq, and NATO operations, as well as command of the 36th Electronic Warfare Squadron and service as an Air Force One Advance Agent.

“Robert’s addition to the Sabel team reflects our continued investment in growing our Air Force and Digital Engineering solution offerings,” said Sabel President and CEO Shawn Purvis. “His rare combination of operational command experience, deep technical expertise across MS&T, C4ISR, and AI-enabled systems, and proven record of driving transformation at scale directly accelerates our ability to deliver the solutions our customers need most.”
