NRO awards BALISTA contracts

The National Reconnaissance Office’s (NRO) Office of Space Launch (OSL) announced on October 30 the award of three Broad Agency Announcements (BAA) for Agile Launch Innovation and Strategic Technology Advancement (BALISTA) contracts to assess and evaluate advanced space technologies. Companies receiving awards under OSL’s BALISTA framework include Cognitive Space, Impulse Space, and Starfish Space.

In March 2024, OSL released the BALISTA BAA which included areas of interest of in-space mobility and maneuver, on-orbit logistics and sustainability, mission acceleration, artificial intelligence for ground operations, and spacecraft propellant particle count.  The BALISTA effort are the first BAA contracts awarded by OSL. These BAA contracts are smaller in scope and will assess emerging providers and capabilities. They are intended to demonstrate new mission capabilities that directly solve critical intelligence problems or address technology needs of interest.

“This BAA helps NRO advance emerging technologies across launch, on-orbit support, and command and control,” said OSL Director Col. Eric J. Zarybnisky.

The BALISTA BAA builds on NRO’s previous successful contracts and creates additional opportunities to expand NRO’s commitment to rapid acquisition and commercial space innovation.
