On March 19, Defense Unicorns announced the launch of UDS Tactical Edge – an extension of its defense-focused software platform Unicorn Delivery Service (UDS), which simplifies software delivery to tactical edge systems anywhere in the world.
Modern weapons depend on software, but delivering new software and updates to front-line systems presents unique challenges. Unlike elastic cloud-computing environments, forward-deployed systems are often resource-constrained with finite onboard computational power and forced to operate in semi-disconnected or airgap networks. Additionally, weapon systems are typically managed by military service members who are trained in warfighting – not IT support and platform technology.
These factors make updating software baselines of critical defense systems extremely challenging. Most systems only see software updates once a year or less. This is especially true for the most critical systems, which tend to view software updates as high impact events likely to result in mission downtime.
However, as the nature of war has shifted to become more data, AI, and ultimately software driven, the need for critical defense systems to update their software baselines more rapidly, and without any mission downtime, has emerged.
UDS Tactical Edge makes deploying mission-critical software to any edge system as simple as installing an app on your phone. UDS was built from the ground up, specifically to serve defense systems. It is secure, compliant, works in degraded, denied, and airgap environments. And now with UDS Tactical Edge, it can help install mission software with a simple press of a button, according to the company.
“At Defense Unicorns, we are on a mission to make software a strategic deterrent,” said Rob Slaughter, CEO of Defense Unicorns. “That means every weapon system needs to have the ability to update on demand, in minutes, rather than in months or years. In future engagements, your software OODA loop will ultimately determine who wins and who loses. The nation with the ability to update their software the fastest has a significant warfighting advantage.”
