IonQ Inc. announced on November 12 that it plans to acquire Skyloom Global, a pioneer in optical communication systems for space-based quantum networks, strengthening IonQ’s presence across quantum computing, networking, and sensing.
The acquisition supports IonQ’s vision to build a global quantum key distribution (QKD) platform through integrated ground and satellite systems, complementing recent purchases of firms such as Qubitekk, ID Quantique, Capella Space, and Vector Atomic.
Skyloom’s space optical communication technology, described as fiberless internet for Earth, positions IonQ at the forefront of merging quantum and aerospace innovation, the company said. Together, the companies aim to enable real-time, orbital quantum data transport and secure entanglement distribution at planetary scale.
“With Skyloom, our Capella business, and ID Quantique, we’re building a platform for quantum key distribution — not just on the ground, but also up into space with satellites,” said IonQ CEO Niccolò de Masi.
