root9B names John Harbaugh, a former NSA employee, its chief operating officer

root9B John Harbaugh, a former senior executive for the National Security Agency (NSA), has been appointed Chief Operating Officer of root9B, a subsidiary of Premier Alliance, effective immediately.

Harbaugh has more than 25 years of diverse experience within the cryptologic and intelligence community as both a member of the U.S. military, and as a senior executive for NSA.

“John and the other subject matter experts root9B has added in the past month are among the leaders in combating what has become a primary issue for our global companies — defending their networks against cyber attacks,” said Joe Grano, chairman and chief executive officer of Premier Alliance. “Companies are learning that plug-and-play systems are not a substitute for human intelligence, experience and training.”

As one of a handful of NSA certified Master Computer Network Operations (CNO) operators, Harbaugh has led several “first-ever” events, including the creation of the U.S. Air Force’s cyber operations capability, design of military and government cyber operations and security training platforms, and development of unique technology solutions. His leadership experience spans the technical and operational realms, from the director of an elite cyber organization focused on critical, tactical mission execution, to the Senior Executive Service managing global enterprises.

Given his unique cyber and security experience, Harbaugh participates as a member of the National Security Agency Advisory Board (NSAAB) Emerging Technologies Panel, providing advice on matters related to research, development, and the application of existing and emerging science and technology. He holds a bachelor of science in cybersecurity from the University of Maryland, University College.
